8 Tips to Save Money for your Dream Vacation

We all reach that point where we acknowledge that we’re beyond due for a vacation. You’re stressed at work, stressed at school, or perhaps are just looking for time away with your significant other. When you start to check prices for flights, hotels, and more, you may begin to feel overwhelmed.

“How am I ever going to save up that much?!”

Rest assured, we’ve got good news.  Use these 8 tips to save money for your dream vacation, even if it’s just a little at a time.

    1. Book at the Right Time: When you start to plan your trip, use tools like Momondo and Google Flights that show prices changes and trends that will allow you to get the best deal.
    2. Save with Hotel & Flight Deals: There are a plethora of travel websites like Expedia, Priceline, Kayak, and more that will allow you to bundle hotels and flights together for a discounted price. If you already know you’re going to be using both, save money with a bundled rate.
    3. Plan in Advance: This might seem like an obvious one, but trust us. By booking far ahead of time, you give yourself the most (and often cheapest!) options – and you also allow time to plan and get excited for your trip.
    4. Take Transit: If you live in a city, it can be far too tempting to take ridesharing apps like Uber or Lyft to get around. However, when you add the costs up it’s still much more expensive than taking a train or bus. Opt to even try to take public transit half the amount of times you would take an Uber, and you’ve already shaved down some expenses.
    5. Make Coffee/Bring Lunch: Coffee is a way of life for a lot of us, and that’s totally okay. However, instead of spending $5 a day on your Macchiato, bring coffee from home or bring a pot to your workplace for a fraction of the price. Your return also doubles if you usually go for a lunchtime splurge. Make it easy for yourself by meal-prepping at the beginning of every week, so that there’s already food in your fridge ready for you to take to work.
    6. Try a Budgeting App: Download an app like Mint or Acorn to help you budget your current expenses and save extra money. If you’re someone who likes to see the money you’re saving in a trackable way, this is a great idea.
    7. Collect Change: This might seem old-school, but it never fails. Even if you just save a few $1 or $5 dollar bills when you stumble upon them, you’re putting away money that would otherwise get easily spent. One fun method you can try is telling yourself that all the cash you save will be your spending money while on the trip. The more cash you save, the more you can spend!
    8. Coupons: Check your newspaper. Check the back of your receipts. Utilize physical coupons whenever you can, and study up on your individual grocer’s coupon policies. Often times, you get better deals (with more options!) online than you do in-store and have more coupons available. Use ShoppingGives to save online and sweeten the deal by giving back at the same time. ShoppingGives has exclusive deals and coupons with your favorites stores and allows you to donate a percentage of your purchase to a cause of your choice. Check here to learn more and head over here to see all the current coupons.

Some of these ideas might seem like no-brainers, but they’re simple and effective ways that will guarantee you some extra money in your pockets.  If you give yourself time to really plan and save for your trip, you can save a bulk of the trip price just by cutting down small costs. No matter which way you do it, always remember, you definitely deserve that vacation!
